SFT hosts monthly events! Most events willtake place the third Tuesday of each month at our new meeting location - Lichgate, at 1401High Road in Tallahassee.Lichgate is a beautiful 3-acre property listed on the U.S. National Register ofHistoric Places and was purchased for the sole purpose of protecting a largelive oak tree. We believe the philosophy of protection integral to thislocation is a perfect match for SFT and the Slow Food mission of preserving afood system that is good, clean, and fair.

We met a week latethis month as our program presenters (Louise Divine, Mark Tancig, and SarahkeithValentine) were off to Decatur and Douglasville, Georgia, for the GeorgiaOrganics Conference and Southern Regional Leaders meeting for Slow Food. Whilethe fragrant scent of our shared dishes floated into the room, Louise sharedthe highlights and inspirational aspects of the hundreds and hundreds offarmers and who attended the meeting. We also heard about community gardentours, great food, and the perspective on agriculture and food institutions andlegislation from Dan Imhoff. Get educated, get good food, keep it clean is themain message.

Nearly 30 of ushung on every word as Dan Seinfeld, a PhD Candidate in Anthropology at Florida State University,told us the story of the domestication of the cacao (chocolate) plant and itsuse in Olmec, Maya, and Aztec culture. Then we stirred up a batch of theblood-red drink with native plants and spices (cocoa, masa harina, allspice,chili powder, vanilla and honey) before sharing our chocolate-themed dishesthat ranged from sloppy mole joes to delicately filled chocolate candies.

The SOUPS that Keith made were simple to learn, beautiful sur la table andFAN-tastic on the palette.  We are so thankful to have him as a member ofthe Slow Food Tallahassee chapter. Chicken Tortilla SOUP! Creamy Tomato SOUP! Collard Greens and CreamSOUP! Miso SOUP! We also served three organic salads from Turkey Hill Farm andfresh, delicious bread from Tupelo�s in Monticelloto the more than 30 people who attended, members and non-members.

Monthly Event at Lichgate -- Community Gardens

Our October Event was focused on Community Gardens and ways Slow Food Tallahasseecan partner with Damayan to help bringthe idea of "Growing Your Own Food" to Tallahassee.We had a twilight tour of the Damayan garden growing at Lichgate then movedinside for a garden discussion. Damayan mainly focuses on setting up gardens atcommunity centers and schools. We discussed SFT coming in after the gardenswere planted and providing recipes and cooking classes, as well as involvingsome area chefs. We also talked about pairing with Damayan on some fundraisingactivities to accomplish some of these goals.
Then we feasted on sweet potatoes. We had everything from a sweet potatoshepard pie and spicy sweet potato fries to sweet potato muffins and a decadentcake. If you are a Yahoo Group member, check out the recipes posted on YahooGroups under the Files and Recipes folder.

Monthly Event at Lichgate -- I Scream! You Scream! We allscream for ICE CREAM!!

Our September event was all about Ice Cream at Lichgate.With just under 20 people, we talked about ingredients and techniques formaking ice creams to achieve different flavors and consistencies and thensampled vanilla ice milk, vanilla Philadelphia-style ice cream, vanilla gelato, Tupelohoney-vanilla frozen yogurt, lemon-buttermilk ice cream, pear-caramel icecream, and green tea-ginger ice cream. Local ingredients used for theseincluded Kurtz & Sons & Sparkman's milks, Turkey Hill Farm eggs, & Tupelohoney. In addition to 7(!) ice creams sampled, we ate fresh persimmons,scuppernong pie, homemade wheat thins, cheese, quiche featuring local eggs,cheese, & pork, and field peas.

Monthly Event at Lichgate -- The Joys of Honey

Despite the threat of impending bad weather, we had a greatgathering of folks at Lichgate for our August Monthly Event. Bob Livingstonfrom the Apalachee Beekeepers Association brought his bees, some beekeepinggear, and some honeycombs and shared much information about keeping bees,making honey, threats to bee colonies, and how bees impact our food system.Afterwards we tasted a large variety of honeys including tupelo, sourwood,gallberry, saw palmetto, orange blossom, wildflower, fall wildflower, andspring wildflower. Then it was feasting time and again we had a wide variety ofdelicious dishes and very few desserts believe it or not! We raised $42 todonate to Lichgate as part of our "Giving Back to the Community"program.

Monthly Event at Lichgate -- celebrating the French in you!

We gathered among majestic live oaks and gardens tocelebrate the Slow life, French style. About 20 people joined us for a potluckpicnic and we enjoyed some wonderful French-inspired dishes. We raised $24 todonate to Lichgate as part of our "Giving Back to the Community" program.
We announced the topics for upcoming monthly events and called for members tovolunteer to organize a monthly event of their choice.

Education Committee Meeting

We discussed goals for the Education Committee in theupcoming year and half. Some projects we will be working on include: workingwith local restaurants to support locally-grown food, creating a localgardening resource, and a cookbook for eating seasonally in Tallahassee.

We also had a guest speaker, Beverely of RawNaturel. She provided samples of her amazing "chocolate pudding",print material, and discussed the myths/facts of Raw Food.
